this is the smile that does things to my heart

That is the, ‘God I’m so in love with her, and I have her in my arms’ smile. I swear, once he and Ziva are together, he’ll never stop smiling, and we’ll see his reserved for Ziva only smile much more often. *swoons*

"There are a lot of fans who would like to see that [Tony & Ziva] story advance much faster than we’re doing it, but I firmly believe a little goes a long way and there are ways to tease it and to flirt that are just as significant and just as meaningful."

Tony and Ziva in season 10 is so hard for me to talk about because they give me too many feelings.  There’s been some talk about how close they were before Eli’s death and how the second half of the season undid all of that somehow.  But looking at this gifset and remembering them in Berlin, that claim makes absolutely no sense to me.  Yes, they got closer in the first half of the season, and Ziva was happier, obviously.  However, even after Eli’s murder and Ziva’s arguable emotional distance after she buried her father and returned from Israel, we got this.  This scene has the warmth of those “post-elevator us” early season 10 episodes but it’s even better.  In the first half of the season, we saw Ziva struggle to open up to Tony about Tali in “Shell Shocked Part II” when it was the two of them sitting in a car staking out their case of the week.  Tony had to pry and remind her that she could talk to him about these things.  Here, despite all that she’s going through, she freely shares her doubts about herself and who she has become with Tony.  He doesn’t rush to her side when she’s already crying and can’t help herself, as he does in “Swan Song.”  He doesn’t compel her to open up to him.  In this scene, she just talks to him about what’s on her mind and lets herself become increasingly vulnerable with him because she trust him with those feelings now.  Tony, in turn, very clearly states that he appreciates her just as she is.  And then they hold hold hands for Chrissakes!

Yes, a car hits them, and yes the situation between them gets messier in the last episodes and yes, Ziva kept Tony out of the loop about her plans earlier on but that openness between them never really goes away.  Tony knows Ziva’s a complicated woman, but that doesn’t scare him away like it might have in earlier seasons.  As season 10 progresses, he learns more and more how to deal with her and support her while also challenging her to be better.  Ziva tries to keep Tony out of whatever mess she might be in, but she’s never that successful.  There are moments, like this one and others in “Berlin” and her apology to him in the finale and even her confession about her moment of weakness, when she can’t help but let him in even though she doesn’t have to and even when in earlier seasons, she would have told him to mind his business about these things.  In fact, despite the strain their friendship is under in the second half of season 10, I think there are more instances of Ziva confiding in Tony in the latter half of the season than there are in the first ten episodes of this season. So I don’t know if there were any setbacks per se.  In the past, we got “moments” between them that were quickly forgotten.  It feels different now; there is progression because the season started with Tony reaching out to Ziva in various ways, and it ended with her reaching out to him in ways that might not have been possible earlier on.  No matter what crashed into them literally or figuratively, no matter how complicated things got between them, these two found their way back to each other and only got closer.  I can’t help but be hopeful about what happens next, even if the pacing is slower than many might like, because this season, it was clear that the goal isn’t just about the push/pull between them but about letting Tony and Ziva grow and allowing these two very different people to understand each other in such a way that the next step feels natural.

THIS! THIS! THIS!!!

In other words “I love you”
